OVERVIEW

We provided an engineering and lift solution for the erection of an antenna and dish for the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory Antenna at the Deep Space Station 35 (DSS35). The DSS35 is part of the wider Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex, which supports deep space missions, including three dozen individual robotic spacecraft already in space!

The DSS35 is a Beam Wave Guide design, which means the antenna has transmission and receiving equipment in an underground structure that also forms the base pedestal for the main antenna and dish to sit on. A complex set up, we carried a full lift design including analysis of the ground support through a test lift and third party review.

We mobilised a Demag CC2800-1 600t Crawler Crane to site to complete erection works. Rigged in Luffing Fly configuration, we offered a project solution that enabled the reflector dish to be erected in a single piece with all structure installed.  This ensured both cost and programme for General Dynamics SATCOM.
